I was in Indianapolis this weekend for my sister-in-law's Baby Shower. So, of course I had to stop by what is named to be Indianapolis's BEST cupcakery, The Flying Cupcake. (As voted by the Indianapolis Star 2009) I went to the bakery located in downtown Indianapolis at 715 Massachusetts Ave. But you can find them at www.theflyingcupcakebakery.com
Right off I have to tell you how CUTE this place is! The pictures on the website don't do it justice. It is such a fun place to sit and have a cupcake! Everything from the paint to the table and chairs is SO fun. You will love it! Their menu has a long list of orginal cupcakes flavors that is sure please. We tryed four; 2 that were great, 1 good, and 1 BAD!
They are judged on my 'Sprinke' Scale 1-5, 5 being the best cupcake ever!
Here is the story on the cupcakes...
Red Velvet Elvis: This was a good cupcake. It was very messy & crumbly because of the chocolate chips. That's right, I said chocolate chips. Now, if you are a Red Velvet fan like me, you might not be too crazy about this cupcake. It is NOT like a traditional Red Velvet, at all!(hint, hint, chocolate chips?!) The description says: "soft cream cheese icing and white chocolate". I could not taste ANY cream cheese in the frosting, it just tasted like a simple vanilla. However take the Red Velvet out of the name and it was a good cupcake on it's own. So it gets 1 out of 5 'Sprinkles' for Red Velvet and 3 out of 5 'Sprinkles' for being a yummy cupcake.
Pretty in Pink: This Strawberry cupcake was wonderful!! The cake was moist and had bits of strawberries in it. The frosting "a delicious strawberry cream cheese" was in fact, delicious. It was incredibly creamy with the perfect amount of strawberry. This was one of my favorite cupcakes (along with the Cinnamon Sugar, but we will get to that in a second). So on the 'Sprinkle' Scale it gets a 4 out of 5 for the cake but the frosting gets a 5 out of 5!!!
Cinnamon Sugar: If you are a cinnamon lover rush out right now and get one of these cupcakes! They were awesome! It was such a unique yummy cupcake. If I got to eat cupcakes every morning for breakfast this is the one I would pick. The cake was a little crumbly, but it just reminded us of a crumb cake, so it was no big deal. The cinnamon buttercream frosting was the perfect match for the cake. It had just the right amount of cinnamon to it. (Too much cinnamon would have ruined it!) On the 'Sprinkle' Scale I reserve the 5 for the best cupcakes in the country. This one and Pretty in Pink were really close, but on the 'Sprinkle' Scale it gets a very high 4 out of 5.
Happy Birthday to Me (Chocolate): Stop right there and put that cupcake down! This one sucks!! I seriously hope that we got a bad batch of these chocolate cupcakes and they don't taste this bad all the time. (You never know, someone might have messed something up in the kitchen. Wishful thinking!!) While I will say they looked pretty, it made no difference after the first bite. The cake was incredibly dry!! Almost like it was a couple days old. The buttercream frosting (if that's what you can call it) was hard and crunchy. Truly a BAD CUPCAKE! I would not even think to buy this cupcake again! So it gets a 1 out of 5 on the 'Sprinkle' Scale. If I could give it a 0 I would.
So that is the story of The Flying Cupcake in Indianapolis, Indiana. If you are in nap-town be sure to stop in and try one. Let us know what flavor you tryed and if you liked it.
A special "Thanks" to Mom & Jeannie for their help in this Review. (They LOVED it! LOL!)
A bad chocolate cupcake??? Is there really such a thing??? Stop! My mind can't take this kind of re-programming.
